Oh, My Heart Again: The Sequel

Well, it looks like I have to completely rewrite this, again.

Y’all probably didn’t want to hear me rant about my heart being slightly broken by the first BreyerFest Auction Previews. A Chestnut Splash Stretched Morgan AND a Glossy Pacer? Argh!

Or hear about me being slightly annoyed by BreyerFest going cashless. Mostly because that means I’ll have to add a trip to the bank to the already long list of things I need to do in the 24 hours I’ll be home before embarking on My Grand Wyoming Adventure. It is definitely a “First World” problem, I know…

(Also: I am still willing to bring along any stragglers with me! Me + Mustangs + Dinosaurs + The Actual Oregon Trail + Epic Scenery: what’s not to love?)

But apparently the treasure I owned in my heart for eight and a half hours has reappeared:

I am currently bogged down with personal and professional commitments for the next week or so, and consequently my Internet time is somewhat limited. This has also been posted somewhere I don’t go anyway (Facebook) so the whole discussion is inaccessible to me and probably moot by the time this gets posted.

Look, I would be willing to pay quite a bit of money to actually get him physically in my house: he needs to be home, with me, and you already know the reasons why. Just because I have the reputation for being thrifty does not mean I am not able to cough up the necessary money when I absolutely have to.

One of the reasons why I am so cheap is so I can allow myself one big splurge a year, and I am more than willing to let this be it for the year. And maybe the next!

But I know it is unlikely: I also know how some other hobbyists are. This whole situation is all so awkward and uncomfortable for everyone involved. I probably have a better shot at that Stretched Morgan, and that would easily blow my budget for several years if I did succeed in placing the winning bid.

And I would end up dealing with a different kind of uncomfortable: anything that breaks my standard 500 dollar barrier freaks me out a little, even if I do not actually pay that much. (Getting my Raffle Showboat home in 2000 was equal parts exhilarating and terrifying!)

Part of my plans for today included a little evil customizing fun with a Family Arabian Mare and a canister of Durham’s Rock Hard Water Putty. I should probably log off now and do just that.

In fact, I think I need to.

The post looks like it was deleted. She should have posted there first! It’s her fault she didn’t do the research.

For a moment there I thought Durham's Rock Hard was something you ate or drank, so I'm glad it isn't...

Can confirm: Durham's doesn't taste that good. It used to be one of my go-to customizing materials back in the dark ages, thought it'd be fun to go old school on a FAM and use up my stash. It's definitely getting... interesting.

(It's kind of like plaster, but harder and less fussy.)

As far as the APH goes, that's also getting interesting. And weird. Geez people, it's not that hard. We've all made grievous pricing errors, not much we can do about it but mope a little, learn from our mistakes, and move on.

If there's a code. for any of this, its: (a) do your research, (b) honor your commitments and (c) no take-backsies.

Back to the (editorial) grindstone...

If it makes you feel any better, the eBay asshole got thoroughly trounced in the comments for what she did. EVERYONE knows. Pretty much everyone told her what she did was wrong. I usually do not support pile-ons, but I think this one was well deserved.

What she did to you was beyond wrong. I hope you get the model one of these days. He's not my taste, but he clearly means a lot to you. You deserve him.

I'm glad she got trounced. That FB group is mine, and I truly debated letting it through (All posts are approved by me before posting). I hoped my great team would jump her, and they did. I missed the whole thing, as I did not feel well and slept all day. GO TEAM!

oh there were plenty that were trying kiss her behind. OMG you need to submit that to ID, Oh he's worth thousands.

I was like so this is the horse you sold on eBay, found out after the fact and cancelled? And no I don't believe you on the someone else listed it without permission BS.

One person doesn’t “deserve” this APH over another person, and nobody ever deserves to be piled on for mistakes made. This hobby can be terrible - I hope the next generation of hobbyists is better behaved.

So the seller listed the horse on Ebay BEFORE posting that question on the FB group? Dumb. No, they do deserve to be reemed. They didn't apologize directly, or maybe offer to negotiate...heck, some nasty comments on a forum? They wouldn't even have gotten that if this had happened to a collector without a following.

Well I wasn't ugly about it. And didn't personally see anyone that was.

But I made it clear what she did was not ok. Do your homework when you are selling something BEFORE you actually sell it and then back out and start making excuses.

She should negotiate with Andrea who had purchased it. Work out some sort of a deal. If they in fact want to sell it.

But I'm betting it's been sold now.

yeah right. from what I see the new generation is a bunch of pushy entitled brats. who think the need to "educate" us every chance they get. when they can't even tell you what a PAM is.

I think we found the eBay asshole here. Hey, maybe next time you make a deal, don't go back on it like a jerk. It's called ethics. You should look it up some time. We've all under priced things or made a bad deal, but the ethical thing to do is to keep your word.

Heck yeah, this right here!👆

For what it’s worth, I’m not the seller. I agree the seller should have kept their word. Beyond that, I don’t see any reason to be so quick to judge and condemn.

Also, I doubt the seller is even aware of this blog. (It’s not like History Diva has thousands of followers - not a criticism, just facts (I think this blog is a wealth of valuable info) - like some of the younger generation on YouTube or TikTok.) So, yeah, I think this hobby could stand some changes.

How do you know how many “followers” Andrea has? She’s been a mainstay in the model horse hobby for decades. Longer than many of those hobby “influencers” on social media have been alive. She’s forgotten more than they know. At least she refers to the molds by their correct names (so sick of the millennials & Gen Z calling LG the Zenyatta mold) & knows what the hobby abbreviations mean. I watch the social media videos of these youngsters & when they finally learn the correct hobby terminology & pronunciations & stop making vids in their bedrooms at their parents house then I’ll be more inclined to follow them.

I am one of those ‘youngsters’ and I can say we are not all like that! Yes, I have seen some who don’t know what they’re talking about, and I may mess up sometimes, but I only joined the hobby a year ago. The reason I follow this blog is to learn all I can!

You’re responding to my comment so I want to welcome you to the hobby & give you a shout out for using Andrea’s blog as a resource. It truly is a treasure trove of info about Breyer & the model horse hobby. There’s so much to learn that even though I’ve been involved in the hobby for nearly 50 years I still learn lots from reading this blog. Also don’t hesitate to reach out to other hobby veterans if you have questions or simply want to share your own thoughts because most in this hobby are welcoming & happy to help & make new hobby friends.

I really hate this attitude, and I see it a lot—it's what drives young people away, and we need young people coming into the hobby to keep it alive. Who cares if someone calls Lonesome Glory the Zenyatta mold? Truly, does it matter? The real name of the mold is listed online; it's not going to be lost to time. There's so much confusion over the names of Breyer molds because Breyer isn't consistent with naming them—do you get upset when someone calls the Croi mold the Connemara Mare mold or vice versa? Or is it only an issue when a tween on TikTok does it?

Also, you call out millennials in your comment, but the oldest millennials are currently 42. I wouldn't say that's as young as you're trying to make out. Your comment is RIPE with ageism and disrespect for the generation who is coming into the hobby. Why would kids want to collect Breyers when other collectors speak to them this way and shame them for living at home?

It matters because these influencers are giving newbies the wrong info. Their followers look to them to learn about the hobby & how can they do that if those they look to know so little of what they’re talking about they don’t realize it’s wrong. Would you like people teaching your kids that 2+2=5 or C-A-T spells dog.
If you’re gonna influence anyone about anything at the very least you should double check you have the basics correct which a lot of these young hobbyist on social media don’t do. So, yes, it does matter. And I would believe & say the same if I saw a Gen X or Boomer giving out wrong info.

I agree with Anonymous 6/13 post. I’ve done room sales at the Clarion for several years & we get lots of tweens & teens coming in asking for models using the wrong names so I tell them I don’t have it just for them to say oh there it is.
The year Lonesome Glory was the Surprise we got lots coming in asking for Zenyatta and I thought they wanted the Zenyatta model but I didn’t have her so I told them no sorry I don’t have that one. But they were really looking for models on the Lonesome Glory mold and I did have a couple of them. I lost sales and they missed models they wanted because they didn’t know the right name.
And I don’t see that anyone is being driven away from the hobby by ageism. Increasing prices and decreasing quality is keeping more people away than any perceived ageism.

I’m sorry. Mistake in my post. I agree with the Anonymous post from June 12. Not June 13. Fingers getting too big for my phone!
