A Bit Salty

Still feeling a bit groggy today, which is a huge improvement over yesterday. You wouldn’t have wanted to be within twenty feet of me then: no coughing, sneezing or other symptoms of infection were visible, but I apparently had my extra-scary "you really don’t want to be near me" face on.

Which I didn’t mind, in retrospect. There are some days when it's probably best that I do quarantine myself, intentionally or no.

Totilas is officially in Australia now (because Australia is closer to China that the US, obviously), and of course, the first photos I get to see of him on Blab involve him getting customized.

I know it’s not kosher to say this - and maybe it’s still the sick talking - but that sort of thing will never stop annoying me.

Mom’s hobby/creative outlet is gourmet cooking; we almost never went out to eat when we were kids because she was always creating something just as fancy or elaborate at home. One of the unspoken rules of fancy cooking we did pick up - mostly because the chef was right at the table with us - is that sprinkling salt or grating some cheese on something you’ve never tasted before is considered something of a insult to the cook.

It makes sense, doesn’t it? You have to take a bite or two of it first before you decide if it needs to be "fixed". Doing that preemptively means you don’t trust the cook.

(She’s a fabulous cook, by the way. As I like to tell people, "she cooks just like your Polish grandma." Heck, even Grandpa preferred her cooking to Grandma’s.)

Anyway, that’s the feeling I get whenever I see a new mold getting hacked up almost immediately out of the box. Couldn’t ya just have waited a few days, even, before you got the hacksaw and primer out? Taken the time to take a bite or two first? Or at least not shown us those pictures right away?

I know they’re going to do it, I just wish it wasn’t always the first thing I saw. I want a little time to enjoy him in all his original raiment.

On a more cheerful and vaguely Totilas-related note, I took Vita on a walk yesterday after work and spotted a bluebird in an apple tree. It came as a pleasing surprise, since (a) they’re not that common here to begin with, and (b) it had just stopped snowing (3+ inches) only about an hour before. I tend to read a bit too much into coincidences, but couldn’t help thinking that a bluebird near my house could be a portent of a Blue Bird in my house.

(FWIW Vita, being the honey badger of a dog that she is, didn't lift her face out of the snowbank it was buried in.)

I found the hacked up totilas rather obnoxious. Ok he's been in hands for 15 seconds and that's what they did? It's not my business what people do with their models, but I'm in agreement that a few days would have been more appropriate.

Meh. I felt somewhat the same way. But whatever, I like CMs, too.

Vita sounds like a doll.

I completely disagree. He's a RR, he's not going to be rare or anything (actually, who cares if he is?), she paid her own money for it so she gets to do what she wants. Seems so childish (sour grapes) to think it's obnoxious that someone is doing what they want with their own personal property.

You've seen pictures of him (she posted pictures of him right out of the box!) what else do you want? One picture will look like every other picture, but I guess she should take him out to dinner and a movie before "offending" some people she'll never meet.

This post made me LOL. Come on, it's plastic, it can't feel, it doesn't know it's been chopped up.

Y'all do realize I'm an OF person, right?

Doesn't matter if it's a common or popular or unpopular mold: I pretty much get the same slightly queasy feeling whenever I see an otherwise perfectly fine model getting customized.

(I get the same feeling with fabric for quilts - scraps are so much easier on my psyche than yardage from the store!)

Vita becomes substantially less adorable when you take a minute to think about what she was trying to dig out of the snowbank.

(She's a Fox Terrier. That's what they do. Now if we could only harness her power for good, not evil...)

I'm really surprised you posted this and frankly dissapointed. I understand that you're an OF collector, but not all of the hobby is. And this is a RR OF. He's going to be out there & common. It's neither rude nor upsetting and I am happy to watch someone elses creative process.

This blog calling her out on it? Totally immature.

Maybe it's just me but I don't think the Diva should be called out for her opinions. She shouldn't have to censor herself to avoid offending some. I do not always agree with bloggers but it doesn't stop me from reading their posts. It takes balls to post your true thoughts and I hope Breyer History Diva continues with her true thoughts because I enjoy reading them!

It's just an opinion, people. She's not calling for the artist to be stoned or driven out of the hobby.

I don't agree with the blog entry, either, but I'm mature enough to let it slide.

So what do you think of people who are customizing Alborozo?

Char said...

If he's all scratched up and stuff, well, I'd definately send him to someone who can put a nice new colour on him. And if he's going to have a new colour, why not resculpt him a bit! I mean, he is nice, but he can be even nicer!

As for this blog, it is indeed Diva's opinion, that's true. But we guys are allowed to give our opinions too, right?

Well, my opinion is that if you don't like it when horses get customized, than you shouldn't look at the customizing topics on BLAB, it's really that simple!
I myself love costumized horses, and even though I like Totilas a lot, I do see some things on him which could be better. So if he gets scratched up, I wouldn't hesitate to ask someone to customize him for me!

Evelyn L. said...

Maybe some of the people posting snide or rude comments haven’t read that the particular artist (name withheld as a courtesy) makes her living as a customizing artist and does not have the luxury of time to let models sit around to be admired when customizing is what brings in a paycheck.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but rudeness should never be condoned.

I'm an OF person too, but I don't feel the need to get all self-righteous about someone doing whatever they want to something they own. A waiting period, that is the most ridiculous and stupid thing I have ever heard. If you get that emotional over a plastic horse, what happens when a REAL tragedy happens?

Anonymous said...

I understand the need to make money to pay the bills. Thing is I don't see how the blogger's opinion is going to interfere with that. If anything the attention will work in the artist's favor.

In any event, I'm done with the discussion. Back to dusting the herd.

I don't object to people customizing, nor do I object to people who object to people who do (hmm, I think that sentence got away from me there). But I have to admit that, before I managed to get a hold of an Alborozo, I did feel really resentful to the customizers. There are only so many and over time more and more will disappear (due to breakages etc). But, I accept that people paid their money and can do whatever they want with their Alborozo's. It just makes me sad to think of how few OF ones there will probably be in 20-50 years. And it's not like his OF is ugly. He's quite lovely in his original grey (and grey is probably my least favourite horse colour).

Jaime Baker said...

HAHAHAHA, I laugh at this. This is one of the most immature, rudest posts I've ever seen from you Andrea. You bash a KNOWN customizer for hacking a precious OF??? Have you seen the horse in person and know for a fact it is perfect? Furthermore even if it WAS perfect, so freaking what. Give my a break with you holier than thou attitude. You want to see him in the flesh and not hacked up, go buy him. What is the point of attacking a customizer except for to be petty and rude? Your whole post was abysmal and shows an immaturity I have not actually witnessed in your posts before. I consider her a friend but I don't care if it was 'Suzy Creamcheese new on the block doesn't know how to turn a dremel on' your post was absolutely absurd. And I won't hide behind anonymity. Sincerely Jaime Baker

There is a big difference between attacking someone and voicing an opinion Jaime Baker. You however, are coming across vicious. Shame on you. This subject matter has clearly been taken way too seriously and way too personal. Moving on

Jaime Baker said...

Put the shoe on the other foot. I meant what I said and regret nothing. Attacking others in this hobby is low, petty and ridiculous, I don't care WHAT your part in the hobby is. The hobby is meant to be fun, educational and oh yeah, let me repeat, FUN. If that makes me vicious for bringing that to light so be it. Karen didn't have to take photos of the horse and post them at all. She did so for those that didn't have him in hand yet. Yet she was attacked. Shame on YOU for supporting the diatribe. Again, NOT hiding behind anonymity. Jaime Baker

Wow. Wow. This is a new low. Karen didn't deserve to be attacked.

Disgusting.

Nice to see the holier than thou Blab clique coming out. Ooh Andrea you insulted the mean girls. Hacking up plastic isn't what is wrong in this hobby. It is forums like Blab that are.

Courtney said...

I just want to throw my 2 cents in to defend the blogger. You do realize that this is a personal blog, where people tend to post their opinions and feelings regarding topics important to them?

I don't think she "attacked" the artist at all. She didn't even post the artist's name, so people like me, who don't visit Blab or collect CMs, even know who she's talking about. "Attacking" the artist would've been replying to the Blab post directly with something along the lines of "omg, i can't believe you did such a thing, you're so horrible, etc etc".

And asking a historical buff to not read the posts if she doesn't like them is like telling someone not to watch the weather channel just because they hate snow. You don't get knowledgeable from avoiding things.

It seems a bit snarky to jump on someone from posting an opinion on their own blog. If you don't like what she has to say, don't read it (hypocritical much?).

It's her model, and her choice what she does with it.
It's not like she came in to your house, took one of your OFs and chopped it up. It belongs to her, and if you don't like extreme customising then don't look at her blog. She's a well respected customiser who doesn't need to be criticised by you.
This post is very immature and inconsiderate.

bubbasmom said...

You people attacking The Diva for her opinions on her own blog need to get a grip. She is entitled to her opinions on her blog, just as you are free to post on YOUR blog. I wonder what you would do or say if somebody attacked your blog? And yes, I did use the term attacking, because this was personally meant.

For another take on the subject, go look at this. Go on, I dare you.

You'll have to cut and paste, but go ahead.

PS Andrea, since you have a fox terrier, you might also enjoy this blog: http://terriermandotcom.blogspot.com/

Sandra said...

So the fact she's attacking someone in her blog is totally OK? But people responding to her very open criticism is not?

Anonymous said...

Wow, there are a lot of insecure "artists" in the model horse hobby. This has been a welcome change from Breyer and Stone bashing.

Anonymous said...

The person that she "attacked" is more angry at the hate mail she has gotten than she is mad at this blog post. The bigger picture isn't the Diva's blog post but rather all the people who took the time to send private, nasty emails to the artist as well as said nasty things on her studio's facebook page. I am angered at those people who would do that in private or would go to her studio's page to say nasty things...the Diva's post is fairly tame compared to all those rude people. I don't think it's fair that the Diva is being made a scapegoat for a larger problem we have in the hobby which is rudeness. Whether you agree or not, it's in a private blog rather than a nasty email or facebook message and I think that makes a difference.

Aren't we all allowed to rant and rave from time to time? I know I do!

RowanMorgaine said...

I think they need to teach people in school how to disagree gracefully. We're never all going to agree about everything, but being able to share one's own opinions and debate things in a calm manner is a skill that's greatly lacking these days. Anytime someone says something that another person doesn't agree with, it immediately devolves into personal attacks (see some of the comments above -- no dear, having a different opinion than yours is not immature or inconsiderate. It's just different).

The classy response to something like this would be "I'm sorry you feel that way. I don't agree with you, and here's why..." without any name calling thrown in the mix.

Wow. I can feel the flouncing from here. And everyone wonders why I don't visit Blab.

Having seen the artists work, I had great wonder to see how you could improve on him. I mean he's an amazing model made from an amazing real life counter part. The customisers skills as an artist are incredible and her vision extrodinary. I didn't know it was possible to improve on perfection but she did it! Kudos to Karen!

You know, weren't the people on Blab the great proponents of "if you are an artists you'd better have thick skin"? They used to viciously dish it out. Guess they've turned into a bunch of thin skinned whimps.
